Are tools like Square Space pushing out Web Designers; is the overall
market too saturated; or are there a lot of missed opportunities being
overlooked? I cover my thoughts on the industry in this video.

I’ve had intentions of learning web design, I’ve even bought an html and
Css book. But the most I’ve done is a free online course. It’s
intimidating. I relate it to starting to draw and seeing professional work
that shows you the gap, which I know should be ignored.
But I’d love to say I can supplement my artwork with at least some
confidence in Web Design. It’s so useful. I just need to be as diligent
when it comes to learning it as I do everything else.
Yes yes yes! I think you hit that nail on the head with this. We are
marketers in graphic design first and foremost. It seems many designers are
never taught this or forget it very quickly. Positioning yourself in the
market this way lands you far more jobs and makes you more marketable
period.
Many tests have proved that making a simple change on a website’s layout
can increase conversions by 300% or more… so just imagine how much money
you are losing if you are driving traffic to a website which is not
designed right and optimized for conversion. To put it simply, it’s no
coincidence all the top internet marketers have custom-done LEAD GENERATING
Wordpress sites with highly sophisticated back-end funnels. Best
investment you will ever make in your online business, hands down!
Great video, this is up my ally actually as I recently just landed a job as
a web designer/developer. I feel that there is a lot of money in web design
both in the corporate and freelance environments. On the corporate end
companies are always actively seeking designers and coders for decent
salaries, or if you do freelance using a tool like WordPress there is still
scope to land well paying clients such as small business owners.
I think that yes there may be hundreds of templates, themes and non-coder
tools for people to make their own websites but that would be like saying
that mechanics will go out of business because someone can buy a car part
off ebay and learn to fit it themselves. Not everyone will want to use the
template, theme or tools they will still gladly pay a web designer instead.
I think the if you had a pie chart of people who do it themselves vs paying
clients then the percentage of payers would always be higher.
If you land a job, had paying clients on the side on top of say an
e-commerce website of your own going then its clear that this trade is
still very lucrative.
This is great advice. We built our business on web design but focusing more
on the optimization side. We taught our clients how to design their own
main pages (see our videos!) and then sold them marketing. You are right
on.
I agree and maybe the term “web designer” is being broken up into multiple
disciplines such as ui/ux designer, marketers, seo, and content writing. I
think there is a clear difference between wanting to work in a position as
a designer and or be a being freelancer/business owner. If you want to
survive on your own we have to move away from being designers only.

nursing to web development after realizing direct care is just not for me.
I am a little apprehensive with the change because even though I have done
some research on the field I fear for the job outlook for Web developers
with so templates and themes available to people these days.
I’m currently (attempting) to start a small business straight out of high
school. We started with graphic design and are branching into web design.
Do you think this is smart? We’re currently using Lynda.com for training.
I don’t understand why businesses purchase templates from sites like
SquareSpace & WordPress? Yes you can write content, change images and add
color themes but these templates are recycle over and over again.
Businesses should invest on custom web design. Why have the same template
layout from another existent business? I think that’s how businesses fail,
differentiate yourself from the competition. Designers don’t really
acknowledged how valuable their designs really are to be sold for just 10
dollars each to these companies without you actually having to see real
numbers on what you really can generate.

plan is to create my own portfolio from scratch, as well as start a
separate niche blog on a cms, after watching this I feel like I’m headed in
the right direction, because I was worried that maybe I wasted my time and
money on the class
I am currently using wordpress right now but I want to learn how to code to
the point of being able to create my own website due to what you said about
creating my own portfolio/resume. Is code academy a good start or do you
have any other recommendations.
When you were in school did they make you learn both, html coding, Adobe,
CS, and Flash? When I was in school they made us learn all of it. We were
made to take intro courses on doing both coding and designing our own
online portfolios. I was wondering if this has changed over the years? They
also made us take up to 30 hours on Art History , I was wondering if this
is just some thing they did at my college?
Roberto, great advice. One thing to keep in mind is that web dev careers
aren’t going away, they’re just becoming more vertically focused. For
example, a web developer could have a very lucrative and very busy career
if he or she focused on specializing in the Drupal CMS platform. Tons of
opportunity in just that single example.

looking into moving more onto WordPress and Adobe Muse. I am not the best
coder, and thinks it’s time to move over to WordPress.
